venting - stories as special interests
Hi just quick vent as I don’t really have anyone to tell and I’m sure this is a product of how my brain works. I hope this is appropriate for this sub. I’ve been fixated on these anime cartoons since January as I love the story and I really enjoy them. I recently got some of the manga volumes and I’ve been having a great time with it. The cartoons are only 12 episodes and I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve watched them. They’re a source of comfort, inspiration, and a way to wind down. I’ve been watching in Spanish since that’s my native language and my manga volumes are in Spanish too. Makes it extra special for me since I used to watch a ton of anime cartoons in Spanish as a child.
Originally I first watched the series subtitles in English with my partner. He enjoyed it too but he doesn’t have the need like me to have things on repeat. A single pass is plenty for him. My brain doesn’t work like that. Even if it hasn’t become my special interest, I would need to watch maybe 2 more times to catch the nuances, emotions and implied details (anything with reading between the lines basically). Since this how things work for me, it’s one of the big reasons I don’t believe in spoilers. Second reason is because, imo, if a story has to rely on surprises to be good, it’s inherently not a good story.
Anyways, tonight I had the episodes playing on the background while I sat in front of the tv on the couch, working on a drawing. My partner was sitting next to me, reading and not paying attention to the tv as he doesn’t mind things being on the background. When specific things happened, I’d hear and giggle as they would remind me of extra things on the manga. I was telling some things to my partner here and there. And after I shared very few details, I remembered and asked if extra details on things he’s already seen count as spoilers. He just said “I’d prefer to read them.” Makes sense I think. But it made me little sad thinking how I don’t have anybody irl to talk about this stories. So yes, feeling a little bit alone because I don’t know anybody else that has to give stories/tv/movies/etc multiple passes to fully grasp them. Also don’t know anyone else that feels the same about spoilers (as in to me they don’t ruin stories). Spoilers don’t make sense to me. They never give you the complete information. Normally, I prefer to say things the second they come to mind, same moment they feel exciting. With this, I sometimes talk during shows/movies/etc unless I make the conscious effort to not say anything.
Tldr: I have to watch shows/movies multiple times to fully understand them. I don’t believe in spoilers. I need to consciously make the effort to not spoil things. I don’t know anyone else that processes things like this therefore I feel little alone sometimes.
