Do you think it is okay to use the word Mohammedans instead of Moselms whether it is in literature, academia or social settings?

Wondering what does the community as a whole think about the word Mohammedans instead of Moslems? The word has been used a lot historically in literature, academia, social interactions and in media but what about using it in modern times? Is it appropriate or is it seen as being derogatory slur?
