Why does every other game now seem to be called "Somethingfall"?
I was looking through some of the recent SGF trailers/game announcements and noticed we now have Enginefall, Mistfall, and Townfall.
Then I started thinking about all the others that immediately came to mind: Lightfall, GreedFall, Godfall and I'm sure there's more I'm missing. I even found a Crowfall!?!?
I mean, what are we even doing anymore?
At this point, slapping "-fall" as a suffix feels so incredibly lazy. Half the time it doesn't even seem to mean anything. Is the town falling? Is the engine falling? What exactly is falling here?
I know a title isn't everything, and I certainly try not to judge anything based on it's title alone, but holy heck! These names immediately make a game feel less interesting to me. They come across as generic, uninspired, and completely lacking in personality.
Wouldn't we want the title to make us curious and excited about what's in store for us. Shouldn't it signal something to me about the world, or setting, the tone, or at least give me a memorable image? But no, we just keep reaching for the same handful of dramatic-sounding yet absolutely hollow suffixes. At this point I should expect for the inevitable Fallfall.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but I can't be alone on this. Whenever I see another trailer for a game now called [Insert word]-fall, I just loose so much interest and enthusiasm for it.
