I’ve been trying to help develop my 6 year old’s moral compass while I still can. I created a little set of color-coded booklets for us to work through this summer.

Each week, there’s a new 4-page booklet that focuses on a pair of related virtues (like courage + confidence, patience + self-discipline). Simple definitions in a language he can understand, plus a few examples and micro-stories about kids his age utilizing the virtues in common situations, plus some questions to get him engaged and thinking about how he can embody the virtues in his own life.

It’s going really well so far. He seems to be genuinely interested, and I can already see him trying to use what’s he’s learning. Plus, having the nightly conversations gives us a shared language to use during day-to-day interactions/challenges/melt-downs.

Because I knew it would motivate him, I made a poster so he can check off each week and see his progress. And little trays for the completed books. Gamification principles at work!

I get a lot out of this sub. Glad to finally have something to give back. If you’re interested, I dropped PDF of the posters and booklets and my Google Drive. Happy to send anyone a link.
