Blocked phone numbers...

I am an author of romance novels, and I have an upcoming scene where a young lady blocks a stalker's phone number. I have never blocked a number before, and I have never been blocked (that I know of.) So I have no idea of how it works in terms of 1) what the caller hears over the phone when the number is dialed. 2) What the callee hears or experiences. Are there "giveaways" that tell you that you've been blocked, or do you have to guess? Do you still have access to voice mail? Does the callee know you've been calling? Answers would really help me write a more authentic passage. Your personal experiences would be amazing. Thank you in advance. (I write under a pen name, so you won't find me on Amazon.
