what’s wrong with me first impressions

General Discussion

I just listened to what’s wrong with me (live version) through a video on YouTube. It’s her first ever song collaboration on one of her albums and I’m so glad she got to do it with the legendary Robert Smith.

When the track list was announced, I initially thought that the song was about Olivia not knowing why she can’t return love to her partner, therefore the title what’s wrong with me. I thought it would have been a contradiction to “begged” (performed live on snl), so it would have shown that she thinks she is the problem in the relationship.

But now that it’s actually been performed, it’s actually about her having the realisation that the relationship itself is the source of her unhappiness. I think that this is way better than the concept I originally thought it would be. Throughout the entire song, she has so much self doubt about herself and she is so devastated, she’s just trying so hard to fix herself. But at the end of the song, she finally comes to that realisation. I think that just shows so much emotional maturity as a song, and the fact that the unhappiness manifests physically just makes this song so much more real.

I think the album just makes so much sense now. The cure is the main turning point with purple and it’s about her realising that her relationship will never be the cure (it will never be able to fix her problems and insecurities internally). Begged is about a one sided relationship where she gives it her all and is trying too hard for a relationship that will never work, yet she still cannot accept it and continues trying. what’s wrong with me is in many ways a continuation of begged, as she’s still giving her all yet this time the self doubt is starting to creep in. It just connects so beautifully and makes me so excited for the album. It’s truly going to destroy me 🥹🥹😭😭😭
