Should I wait or move on?

There's a friend of mine I genuinely have a crush on. He's smart, intelligent, sweet, caring and all other adjectives that make him admirable. Now there is another friend of him whose a girl and is head over heels on him. They are friends for a longer time and she kind of has a hold on him. They also dated formally for a brief period but are no longer together now officially. Now, he is quite frustrated with the way she is obsessed about him and often complains about her to me. For example, she makes him go overboard financially and do stuff for her which he doesn't like but can't really say no to. They often have ugly fights where the girl often threatens him with a multitude of things and he comes to talk to me whenever he is feeling down and sad. He has often told me that in an objective way all the qualities he is looking for in a girl is present in me which often increases my hope. But the kind of influence this girl has on him, I don't think I'll ever be able to be with him. She also hates that I am friends with him. He is quite sure of the fact that he has no romantic feelings for her but just can't say no to her tantrums.

I really like him and somewhere deep down I feel he has some soft corners for me as well. But I have never met this girl and I don't know if he is telling me the complete truth. I don't know if I should wait for him to come and tell me he likes me or I should move on from crushing over him. P.S. He knows I have feelings for him.
