Idk what I'm doing wrong

I just got back into dead by daylight after years of not playing and I don't understand how people play killer. Idk if this is a common complaint but I feel like I start, find one survivor, chase for 30 seconds and then 2 gens are done, by the time I finish the chase another one pops, and at that point no matter how fast I kill and hook there's just no pressure to be gained. Genuinely I don't know how to deal with it. Is there anything I should know or do besides just running meta perks (I can't cause I'm broke asf)
