Suddenly getting crashes when using smoke or tampering with AC units

I have 40 hours into the game already and only as of today did this become an issue. I've tried lowering the volumetric fog and effects quality but it seems to make no difference.

I've also tried deleting shader cache, verifying integrity of game files, and restarting my PC.

Anyone else having this issue? Is it something with the newest update?
