38 weeks and a bit nervous about making it to Mount Sinai West from Fort Greene given Knicks and World Cup games. Am I stressed over nothing?
My wife is expecting our first on June 18th with delivery at MSW, and we live in Fort Greene without an car. Under the best of circumstances, a cab takes 45m. During a regular work day, closer to 75-90m. We are looking to have a natural birth, so no real scheduling ahead of time.
I’m nervous about her going into labor during the potential insanity in midtown if the Knicks win (not to mention the large road closures for the World Cup I’ve been reading about). It might take forever or literally be impossible to drive cross-town. I’m usually an avoid-driving-at-all-costs kind of guy, but obviously I’m not looking to have my wife take the subway in labor.
How would you prepare for this on game days? Should we try to spend game days at a friend’s place in the UWS just in case? Should we try to labor at home until things settle down? I’d love to hear perspective from parents who have had to prepare for similarly “long” journeys to the hospital in this unpredictably crazy city.
