The shill bidding on Whatnot is getting completely out of hand. Here’s what to look out for.

Buyer- Vent 😫

Hey everyone, I need to rant, but I also want to warn buyers who are still trying to find actual deals on Whatnot. I’ve been using the app as both a buyer and a small seller, and the amount of blatant shill bidding happening right now—especially in the bigger rooms—is getting completely ridiculous.

It feels like some streamers are treating the platform like their own personal scam ecosystem, completely violating Whatnot's Trust & Safety guidelines and federal auction laws.

If you are tired of getting ripped off, here are the major red flags and tactics I keep seeing every single day:

  1. The "Mod Support" Hike

I can’t count the times I’ve been bidding on an item only to find myself in a rapid-fire bidding war with one of the channel’s own moderators. The moment you stop bidding, the mod miraculously wins the item. They claim they are just "helping the seller out" or "protecting the market," but it's a massive scam to artificially pump prices.

  1. Burner Accounts & Sudden Death Exploits

Sellers are actively using burner accounts or coordinating with group chats to target low-second auctions and "Sudden Death" streams. Because Whatnot allows custom max bids, a shill account will quickly drop a custom bid right at the desired price ceiling. This tricks authentic buyers into panic-swiping at an inflated price right before the clock runs out.

  1. The "Failed Payment" Epidemic

Ever notice how some massive streams have an insane number of "failed payments" or immediate cancellations? When a shill bidder accidentally bids too high and wins the item over a real buyer, the seller just quietly cancels the transaction or lets the payment fail so they can re-run the item in the next stream.

How We Can Fight Back

  • Stop Panic Swiping: If an auction clock is at 10 seconds or less, do not let FOMO take over. If the bidding suddenly skyrockets instantly, let the other account take the hit.
  • Document and Report: Whatnot usually turns a blind eye to top earners unless there is undeniable proof. Take screen recordings of the bid logs, note the usernames driving up the prices, and submit them directly via Whatnot Support.
  • Walk Away: The absolute best metric we have is our viewership. If a room feels dirty, leave. Support the smaller, honest sellers who actually let their auctions run raw from $1 without manipulating the room.

Has anyone else noticed specific categories or prominent rooms where this is happening constantly? How are you guys dealing with it, or have you completely given up on auctions at this point?

Let’s discuss.
