Edit: I changed post flair so people can leave advice, as I realized that is what I’m looking for.
Hello all. This is some background that you will need to know to understand the current situation. I am not looking for comments on any of the politics surrounding this. I am a leftist (lean centrist on a lot of financial things but very left on social things). I am anti-excessive violence but still pro police, and am pro prison reform but am NOT an abolitionist. I am also queer. I am 19 and finishing my junior year in undergrad. I live in Illinois, near Iowa. I am studying sociology.
I have been dealing with chronic health issues off and on since I was 10. Turns out it was due to a past injury, hypermobility, and mold and drinking water problems. I am now chronic illness free, and have been for a few months. It is amazing and I never thought I would be mostly pain and fatigue free.

I didn’t set out to study sociology. I love working with the public and being the person people turn to in bad situations. I thrive in emergency situations and love working in a team. I do not do well if I am working by myself. I love solving puzzles and helping people. I am very against harming people unless they are a threat to others. Ive wanted to be a police detective and negotiator since I was 13, but had to switch due to my health worsening.

The decision, once I became healthy again, was whether to continue on to grad school and study social work (probably work in healthcare) or try the police route. I am not super fit (I am lean but have a 14 minute mile and can’t lift more than 65 pounds \[im about 140\]), and due to mental and physical health history I would have a tough time being approved for police.

Due to this, my family hating the police, the current police environment, and many people telling me that I would not be good in police work and social work would be a better avenue, I have decided to pursue social work.
It isn’t that social work doesn’t seem interesting, it is just that I love the idea of police work. However, I know the little that I’ve seen from ride alongs and such is very limited and I would probably be happier in social work, it just feels like I just got the possibility of police work back just to have it go away again.
