Why did Joachim peiper move to France after the war ?

He was an ex ss officer moving into a country his side brutalized and occupied

France had strong resistance networks and survivors were very aware of German officers so he wasn’t exactly anonymous

Unlike staying in west Germany he was outside his own country’s legal support system

Hostile public environment even if the authorities tolerated him on paper it was a powder keg waiting to explode

Seems like if his goal was a safe life after the war why not move to a South American country like Argentina?
