Opening a Relationship?

Advice

Reaching out for some advice as I'm lost and confused.

I (bi, 29M) am in my first relationship with a guy (gay, 28M) that I met on a dating app last year. We weren't necessarily each other's types in terms of looks but we hit it off fairly quickly and have been together for around 6 months after dating for around 2.

So far things have been great, good times, no arguments or conflicts. Admittedly the sex was difficult because his libido is high, but I was inexperienced apart from the occasional hookup and was facing struggles at my work which contributed to a bit of a mental block (which has since resolved, and I do think our sex life has improved since).

Over the past month he's been having quite a few doubts about our relationship, and I could tell it was bothering him. He felt like the sex and physical attraction mattered more to him than he realized, and he was unsure if he could see us together long term. But he wasn't sure also exactly what the issue was, just that I'm "different" from the other boys he's dated. For context, he's been in 2 earlier relationships which were quite tumultuous.

It came to a head yesterday when I went over to his place, where he told me his gut felt like he needed to explore with other people (both dating and sex) - to know himself, and to really know if he wanted to continue a committed relationship with me. He has anxiety and also tends to think about things at a certain intensity. It ended up being very emotional, with both of us crying. He said he still loves me which has made things even more confusing. I told him he should do what's right for himself and so now, we're on a break for a few months while he figures things out.

At this point, I'm not sure what I should do - open up the relationship officially so he can satisfy his sexual needs (if that's indeed the problem)? I definitely lean towards monogamy but I've been considering the options; I'm not sure how to proceed from here too other than giving him the time and space he needs.

Any and all advice would be appreciated!
