Shoes for asphalt

I've moved back to the CA desert and while I can run my dogs around my parents house, I've barely gotten them out for walks! The ground is too hot and I remember having this issue with dogs here before. I know walking them in the early morning would be best, but I have a disability that keeps me from being able to be up that early, and it's not a safe area for night walks. I tried getting them used to shoes before the move, and bought Muttluks, but they came right off and were hard to get on. Any advice?
