If doctors can take lavish foreign junkets from pharma without consequences, how confident can we be about prescription or treatment choices?
Thirty doctors from at least nine states were found guilty of accepting a foreign trip worth ₹2 crore to Paris and Monaco, fully funded by pharma company AbbVie. The Department of Pharmaceuticals even set up a special committee that concluded AbbVie violated the Uniform Code of Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices, but six state medical councils still haven’t submitted any action-taken report, despite an NMC reminder on May 26.
Even the RTI applicant, an ophthalmologist, pointed out that the NMC and the pharma department refused to disclose the actual names of the 30 doctors.
