Minolta Freedom III is not working (probably user error)

I just bought this Minolta Freedom III from a yard sale for $3. I have pretty much zero experience with film cameras. I noticed the screen was blinking and showed 0, so I replaced the batteries. It was still blinking zero, so I tried asking AI what the problem could be. When opening the back, there was film in it that looked to be properly loaded (I think maybe), but AI told me to re-insert it. I aligned the tail with the gears and closed the film threader and the back, but nothing happened. I also used the manual to help teach me how to load the film (I don't think this is the problem). I think the problem has something to do with the automatic film threading. The screen also still blinks zero after doing this. From my research, I think some kind of threading motor is supposed to do something after I add the film, but it isn't working. I hope this is a good enough explanation.

Please let me know if you have any ideas for things to try; I'm not opposed to trying a more complex fix. Also, if you need more information or pictures, let me know.
