Fieldwork, gaming, and travel: ASUS ROG G16 or Lenovo LOQ despite doubts about their reliability? Help

Laptop Request US

Hello everyone,

Today I really need your help, so let me explain my situation.

I’m an environmental engineer looking for a computer that can handle both my work and entertainment needs.

My job is a mix of about 50% working from home, 15% in the office, and 35% in the field. Most of my work consists of office tasks that are not particularly demanding: multiple Excel spreadsheets open, Google Chrome, Windows File Explorer, Word, calendar apps, and similar programs, plus a window for background music. Nothing too extreme. In the screenshot I attached, you can see what would be considered a heavy office workload for me.

The main challenge is that I’m constantly moving between activities in the field: supervising contracts, visiting companies, participating in community-related activities, and commuting between home and the office. I work for my city’s local government, which means I often carry a backpack with my laptop, notebook, water bottle, two jackets (one for work and one personal), charger, mouse, phone charger, and a few cables. Right now, the weight bothers me about 20% of the time, but there are definitely moments when I wish I could travel lighter.

As for entertainment, I enjoy playing AAA games when I have time on Sundays. I’d like to play games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 on a 4K TV or on my 1440p 185Hz monitor, the latest Indiana Jones game, God of War, and occasionally World of Warcraft. I also use my laptop connected to the TV for movies, seed a few torrents, run virtual machines, and I want enough computing power to learn programming and experiment with cybersecurity projects. I’m even considering using FPV drone simulators before getting into the drone hobby.

I’ve always liked having more hardware power than I strictly need because there are always those occasional situations where extra performance becomes useful. I believe having additional computing capacity improves productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness, which ultimately translates into less time working and more free time.

The problem started a couple of months ago when my 2022 Acer Nitro 5 began having issues with its graphics card. That story deserves its own post. If anyone from Acer happens to read this: you lost a customer. The laptop has a 10th-generation i5, 24GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a GTX 1050 4GB that eventually failed. Now I need to buy a replacement that can meet all my needs.

Since my Acer’s failure was heat-related, I’ve been considering a laptop with a Ryzen 7 processor because many people claim they run cooler, or alternatively an Intel i7. My target configuration would be 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and an NVIDIA RTX 5050, mainly to upgrade my gaming capabilities, extend the machine’s lifespan, and comfortably play games at good settings for hopefully the next five years.

Right now, I’m mainly considering an ASUS ROG Strix G16 or a Lenovo LOQ. Lenovo Legion models that I’ve looked at are well above $1,800 USD, which is more than I’d like to spend. My budget is around $1,400 USD maximum.

I’ve even considered building a desktop PC and continuing to use my Acer Nitro strictly for work, or complementing it with a tablet such as the Lenovo Yoga Tab Pro.

My biggest dilemma is choosing between these options. A Lenovo LOQ with similar specifications is obviously cheaper, but after months of reading comments and reviews, I’m concerned about reports of motherboard failures caused by overheating. Coming from a laptop that already suffered heat-related problems, that makes me hesitant. At the same time, I don’t want to buy the ASUS and keep feeling like I’m carrying too much weight every day.

What I’m really looking for are real-world experiences from users of the laptops I mentioned, especially with similar specifications. If you are someone with a similar lifestyle and use case, how did you solve this dilemma? I even considered switching to Apple, but I’ve read about various limitations and have seen users return to Windows because of them.

What would you do in my situation?

I’ll leave links to the two models I’m most seriously considering. I would greatly appreciate your analysis, recommendations, and personal experiences. I’ve been thinking about this decision for quite a while now and still haven’t found a solution that fully satisfies me.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and for any advice you can provide.
