On the birth anniversary of Lieutenant Navdeep Singh, we remember a brave young officer of the Indian Army whose life was defined by courage, leadership and an unwavering commitment to duty. Born on 8 June 1986 in Gurdaspur, Punjab, Navdeep Singh grew up with a deep sense of patriotism and a desire to serve the nation. His determination and hard work eventually led him to the Indian Army, where he was commissioned into the Army Service Corps and later attached to an infantry unit operating in the challenging terrain of Jammu and Kashmir. Though his military career was brief, the impact he left behind remains extraordinary. In August 2011, while deployed near the Line of Control in the Gurez sector, Lt Navdeep Singh took part in an operation against heavily armed infiltrators attempting to enter Indian territory. During the intense firefight that followed, he displayed remarkable courage and leadership, leading from the front despite being exposed to enemy fire. Even after sustaining serious injuries, he continued fighting and ensured that the infiltrators were neutralized, preventing them from advancing further. His actions not only contributed to the success of the mission but also protected the lives of his fellow soldiers. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries, making the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation at just 25 years of age. In recognition of his exceptional bravery and devotion to duty, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award. Today, on his birth anniversary, Lt Navdeep Singh is remembered not only as a decorated soldier but as a symbol of selfless service and determination. His story reflects the values that define the finest traditions of the Indian Army—placing duty before self, leading from the front and standing firm in the face of danger. More than a decade after his sacrifice, his legacy continues to inspire soldiers, veterans and young Indians across the country. His life may have been short, but the example he set through his courage and sacrifice ensures that his memory will endure for generations. On this day, we honour Lt Navdeep Singh, a hero whose service, bravery and dedication to the nation will never be forgotten.
