Corporate realities I learned too late and sharing so u dont suffer like me
For context, I came from a startup environment that slowly evolved into a more corporate organization. Early in my career, I believed that working hard, being available, and getting things done would naturally lead to recognition.
Here are three things I wish someone had told me:
1. Be visible to the people who matter.
Don’t let yourself get buried in execution work. I worked hard, was available for everyone, and consistently delivered. Yet the feedback I often received was simply that I was “nice.” When you start hearing advice like “focus on more valuable work” or “be more strategic,” take that as your cue. Visibility matters.
2. Learn to speak with confidence.
Ask questions in meetings. Share your thoughts and perspectives. The corporate world doesn’t always reward introverts and hard workers automatically. Sometimes your contribution needs to be heard, not just seen.
3. Find an ally early.
Build relationships with people across different teams and functions. These are the people who will advocate for you when you’re not in the room, especially during calibration and talent discussions. Sponsorship and advocacy matter more than most people realize.
