Is AI the "nuclear moment" of the internet era — and does the internet's decades of growth even compare to centuries of physics?

Two things I've been thinking about:

1. Physics took centuries to reach nuclear fission — slow, foundational, building on itself. The internet, by contrast, exploded in decades by standing on the shoulders of physics, biology, and mathematics all at once. Is that compression of progress itself significant?

2. If nuclear fission was the moment physics crossed a threshold it couldn't uncross — is AI that moment for the internet? Or are the two incomparable because the nature of the breakthroughs is fundamentally different?

Curious what people think.
