Career Paths
I (18f) have known I wanted to do accounting since middle school. I am a double major in Accounting and Economics at a university right now. I know I want to do accounting as a career, but I'm unsure about the specific stream.
This winter I finished a processing (admin) internship at a public CPA firm and secured an accounting internship for spring 2027. If they like me, they intern to hire so I'll have a job at graduation. (They really really liked me in the processing internship and the managing partner said straight out if i keep it up I'll have a full time offer) This July I also start a co-op tax internship with FedEx. So I'm getting to do both the public and the corporate world.
My current plan is to do a few years in public to get my CPA and then figure out where I want to go from there. I like tax, but I'm worried about sustainability and job security, so things like audit and forensic seem more stable. The biggest thing is I am a Canadian citizen living in the US, not knowing if I may go back to Canada. My number one option is to specialize in international tax, or go a corporate route for an international company.
I'm not interested in the big four, they don't seem to be the kind of working environment I want. Any suggestions for a stream of accounting to go into? Are there any options that economics opens up, because I really like that type of analysis too.
Also I'm not going to change out of accounting so don't try. This job was made for me and I've loved the classes and experience I've had in this field so far. I just need to narrow down specifics.
What should I be doing in university to help with this?
