I finally had the money conversation with my parents. Here is what I found out.
I kept avoiding this for 3 years. Every time I thought about asking my parents about their finances I found a reason to postpone.
Finally did it last month. Here is what I found:
- Dad has an LIC policy from 1999 that barely covers 2 lakhs
- No term insurance
- Their combined savings would last maybe 18 months if income stopped
- They had no idea what their monthly expenses actually were
I am not writing this to shame them. Their generation was not taught any of this and they spent everything on us.
But I spent the next two weekends helping them:
-
List all monthly expenses properly for the first time
-
Upgrade the LIC to an actual term plan
-
Open a simple FD as a buffer
It was uncomfortable for exactly one hour. Then it just became problem-solving together.
If you have been avoiding this conversation — the discomfort is shorter than you think.
