Running under SG heat and humidity + thalassemia minor
I’m 24F and moved to Singapore a few months ago. Most of my exercise has been pilates because it’s low-impact and air-conditioned, but lacking the cardio I truly need.
I’ve never really gotten into running due to my beta thalassemia minor with my hemoglobin usually sits around 10–11.3 g/dL (normal range for women is generally around 12–14). I occasionally take iron-related supplements when I start feeling slightly dizzy, usually after spending too much time in the heat, walking a lot, getting dehydrated, or going a while without eating red meat.
I’ve been wanting to give running a try, but I’m worried I’ll get out of breath really quickly. That fear has honestly been the main thing stopping me from starting.
I live near Bedok Reservoir and was thinking of trying some evening runs. For those who run in Singapore’s weather, do you have any tips for dealing with the heat and humidity? Also, any advice on pacing, beginner-friendly distances, or routes around Bedok Reservoir that won’t be too overwhelming for a complete beginner?
Would love to hear from anyone who started running with low hemoglobin levels or similar conditions as well!
