A lot of students get confused between actual marks, letter grades, grade points, SGPA, YGPA, DGPA, and how to convert it all to a simple percentage.
So here’s a complete breakdown with examples to clear things up!

**1. How Marks Convert to Grades**

The university uses a letter-grade system instead of showing subject-wise marks on your grade card. For Theoretical, Practical, and Sessional subjects, the scale is exactly the same.

**The Grading Scale:**

90 – 100: O (Outstanding) ➔ 10 Points

80 – 89: E (Excellent) ➔ 9 Points

70 – 79: A (Very Good) ➔ 8 Points

60 – 69: B (Good) ➔ 7 Points

50 – 59: C (Fair) ➔ 6 Points

Below 50: F (Fail) ➔ 2 Points

⚠️ ***Note: The passing mark for ALL subjects (Theory and Practical) starts at 50. Anything below 50 is an F.***

**2. What Are Credits?**

Each subject has assigned credits depending on the workload.

ESP: 0.5 Credits

DSA: 3 Credits

Discrete Math: 4 Credits

👍🏻***Rule of thumb: Higher credit subject = higher impact on your GPA.***

**3. What Are Credit Points?**

**Formula: Credit Points = Credits × Grade Point**

***Example 1:***

Suppose Discrete Math has 4 credits, and you score an 'O' (10 points). 4 × 10 = 40 Credit Points

***Example 2:***

Suppose DSA has 3 credits, and you score an 'E' (9 points). 3 × 9 = 27 Credit Points

**4. How SGPA Is Calculated**

*SGPA = Semester Grade Point Average.*

**Formula: Total Credit Points / Total Credits**

***Example Calculation:***

Let's say your semester looks like this:

Discrete Math (4 Cr): Got 'E' (9 pt) ➔ 36 Credit Points

DSA (3 Cr): Got 'O' (10 pt) ➔ 30 Credit Points

Subject 3 (3 Cr): Got 'A' (8 pt) ➔ 24 Credit Points

 ESP (0.5 Cr): Got 'O' (10 pt) ➔ 5 Credit Points

●Totals:

Total Credits = 4 + 3 + 3 + 0.5 = 10.5

Total Credit Points = 36 + 30 + 24 + 5 = 95

SGPA = 95 / 10.5 = 9.04

**5. What Is YGPA?**

*YGPA = Yearly Grade Point Average.* It combines both semesters of one academic year.

**Formula : (SGPA1 + SGPA2)/2**

**Example:**

Sem 1: 9.8 GPA

Sem 2: 9.0 GPA

YGPA = (9.8+9.0) / 2 = 9.4

**6. What Is DGPA?**

DGPA = Final Degree GPA. This is the final GPA printed for your whole degree. For a standard 4-year B. Tech course, the formula is:

**DGPA = \[ YGPA1 + YGPA2 + 1.5(YGPA3) + 1.5(YGPA4) \] / 5**

🚨 ***Note: 3rd year and 4th year have a 1.5x multiplier. They matter WAY more in your final DGPA than your first two years.***

**7. GPA to Percentage Conversion**

The official university conversion formula is:

**Percentage = (GPA - 0.75) × 10**

***Examples***:

\> If your GPA is 9.0: (9.0 - 0.75) × 10 = 8.25 × 10 = 82.5%

\>If your GPA is 8.2: (8.2 - 0.75) × 10 = 7.45 × 10 = 74.5%

**8. Important Things Many Students Miss:**

●Credits Matter More Than the Number of Subjects: A 4-credit subject affects your GPA drastically more than a 0.5-credit lab.

●One Lower Grade in a High-Credit Subject Hurts: Getting an 'A' (8) instead of an 'O' (10) in a 4-credit subject loses you 8 total credit points instantly. That drops your SGPA fast.

●Practicals Help Stabilize GPA: Labs usually have lower difficulty and easier scoring. Use them as a buffer for your SGPA!

●Final DGPA Is NOT a Simple Average: A lot of students think it's just (Y1+Y2+Y3+Y4)/4. This is WRONG. Remember the extra weightage for the 3rd and 4th years!

💡Final Takeaway (TL;DR)

Marks ➔ Letter Grade ➔ Grade Point ➔ (Grade Point × Credits) = Credit Points ➔ (Total Credit Points / Total Credits) = GPA.

**Key points for success:**

1. Performing well in high-credit subjects (like Discrete Math/DSA).
2. Avoiding low grades in core papers.
3. Maintaining consistency, especially in your 3rd and 4th years.

Hope this helps. Good luck :)
