Spent a month doing automations for small businesses. Nobody needed AI. They needed this.

Honestly, I didn't expect much from any of them.

Two were small businesses, one was a mid-sized service company. None of them had big budgets. None of them were "tech-forward" people. One of them still used a paper notebook to track follow-ups.

That last one is where something clicked for me.

He ran a local handyman service. Good at the work, terrible at the back end. Leads would come in through Google, through Instagram DMs, through referrals. He'd reply when he remembered. He said he was losing maybe 4 or 5 jobs a month because he just... forgot to follow up. At roughly $180 per job, you do the math.

I built one thing. When a new lead came in from any source, it auto-sent a WhatsApp message within 4 minutes, pulled the job type from the form, and asked one qualifying question. That's it. No AI, no fancy logic. A basic workflow that took me about 3 hours to build.

He closed 6 jobs in the first 3 weeks from leads he would've completely missed before. Not because the automation was smart. Because it just... showed up on time.

The other two were similar. One was a dental clinic that was manually confirming appointments over the phone. Receptionist was spending around 35 minutes a day just on confirmation calls and still getting no-shows at a 22% rate. We set up an automated WhatsApp reminder sequence, 48 hours out and again 2 hours before. No-shows dropped to under 9% in the first month.

The third was a content company managing 7 clients with zero internal tracking. Everything lived in someone's head. We built a basic project status board that auto-updated from a form and sent weekly summaries to the client. Nobody changed how they worked. They just stopped getting angry emails asking for updates.

Here's the thing I keep learning... none of these were technical problems. They were "nobody had time to sit down and fix this" problems. The automation wasn't the hard part. Finding the one thing that was silently costing them every single week was.

That's the actual skill. Not knowing n8n or AI or whatever tool is trending. It's sitting with a business owner for 30 minutes and asking "what's the thing you do every week that you hate doing but can't stop?" That conversation is where the real work is.

Happy to answer questions if anyone's thinking about doing something similar for their business or for clients.
