Canvas Notebook v2026.6.7.1 — Self-Hosted AI Workspace Update
Hey,
Frank here with a fresh update on Canvas Notebook, our container-first AI workspace that keeps everything on your own machine.
What's new in this release:
We shipped a big batch of polish and new capabilities over the past ~2 weeks (412 commits since the last tag). The headline changes:
- Attachment Lightbox Preview: Images and vision attachments in agent chat now open in a proper lightbox instead of awkward inline rendering. Works for chat sessions and home prompts.
- Marp Slide Export: Markdown slide decks (Marp) got native PDF export and proper mobile scaling. Good for quick pitch decks or documentation without leaving the workspace.
- Studio Loading States: The integrated Studio (image generation, editing, video, sound) now has better skeleton loading and preview handling — fewer "is it broken?" moments.
- File Tree Refresh: We hardened the live file watcher and reduced unnecessary re-renders when files change. Should feel snappier on large workspaces.
- Vision Attachments: Stricter validation on vision-capable model attachments means fewer failed tool calls because of malformed images.
- Todo Email Policies & Public Excalidraw: Automation todo emails now respect send policies correctly, and public Excalidraw sharing got origin-lock fixes.
Why this matters: Canvas Notebook isn't trying to be "another ChatGPT wrapper." It's a full workspace — files, terminal, chat, automations, Studio media generation, skills, and bring-your-own-model — running in a single Docker container. No cloud lock-in, no data leaving your box.
We're bootstrapped, building in public, and shipping weekly.
Questions I'd love your take on:
- For those running local AI setups: what's the #1 friction point in your current workspace workflow?
- Would a built-in Marp → PDF export be something you'd use for documentation or presentations?
