Daily notes: the simplest productivity habit I know
For a long time I tried to capture everything in my task manager. Every small thought, every article to read, every follow-up. The list grew to hundreds of items. I never got back to most of them.
Some things are semi-structured: things you want to do today, or on a specific day in the future, but not a real project or recurring task.
What I do now: open a blank note every morning, dump whatever is on my mind. Work stuff, side projects, books I want to read, things to follow up on. During the day I add to it. At the end of the day I check what I did and what I didn't. The next day I start fresh.
The cognitive science behind it exists. Bluma Zeigarnik found in 1920 that unfinished tasks occupy working memory even when you're not actively thinking about them. Writing them down closes that loop. Your brain stops holding on to them. You feel calmer almost immediately.
The key distinction I'd make: daily notes are not tasks and not journaling. They're a temporary buffer for things that are too small or too vague to be tasks, but too important to lose. The next day you start with a blank page. Nothing carries over unless you decide it should.
One thing that makes this work well for me: the tool I use lets me promote any bullet directly to a proper task or project in one click. So if something in the daily note turns out to need more structure, I don't have to copy-paste between apps. That removes the main friction point.
It also works as a reading queue. Instead of a read-later list that never gets read, I add a few links to that day's note. If I don't read them, they come up in my weekly review and I decide then whether they're worth keeping.
Does anyone else use something similar? Curious what works for you.
