I love my cats, but they're destroying my health.
I took in four cats six weeks ago from someone I know that couldn't take care of them anymore. I've known these cats for a while, so they're used to me, but they're not used to being indoors and limited to a single room (I rent a room, so this is the best I can offer them.) I can fit two litter boxes in here, otherwise I'd get more. I buy them Iams Proactive cat food. I buy them Dr. Elsey's cat litter. I downsized on some of my possessions to accommodate them, gave them hiding spots and ultimately let them decide where they want to sleep for the most part. Some places are off limits. I buy them toys, catnip, and treats. When I have to leave during the day, I turn on nature documentaries for them. I've been using an air humidifier to keep the room cool and help one of my girls to breathe easier. I even designed a schedule for them. They used to be indoor-outdoor and ultimately had run of the house, so I'm trying to give them grace considering that, and I'm trying to work my way up to getting them a catio. I've followed as many "rules" as I can for happy cats.
I knew it would be a challenge to take them in, but their previous owner's attempts to re-home them due to constant marking and fighting with another cat (who I didn't take in) were met with judgement from total strangers and shelters and rescues refusing them. I didn't want them to lose everything they had known, so I've just been breathing through it.
They don't fight, thankfully, but the marking is still a sizable issue . Three of them play together and play with me, but one of them (the only intact cat, a tom) just sits and stares out the window. I've tried different things with him, but aside from cuddles, he's not been interested. He doesn't understand that he's safe in here, especially with the fact that he would go outside and get into fights constantly. These four at least don't show signs of conflict, but the biggest problem I've been having is their marking. I spent all of yesterday cleaning my space and cleaning up any urine spots that I found, and I was sure that finally, FINALLY, I had gotten rid of the smell of ammonia. I sat down on the bed to take a breather, right into a massive puddle of urine that had soaked into my mattress. Even as I went to sleep last night, I woke up to find that they had marked my laundry basket. I understand people are gonna tell me to take them to the vet, and I wish that I could, but I'm on SSDI and budgeting points to leaving me in the double digits once I've bought their supplies.
It's been hitting me really hard because I feel like a bad pet parent. My health has already been poor for a long time, and it's been getting harder to push myself out of bed to take care of them because I've been feeling sicker. I feel like I'm trying so hard, going above and beyond in every way that I can to give them somewhere to be safe and happy, but so many signs suggest that I'm failing them. I'm heartbroken. I don't wanna give up on them, but I've cried four times just this week. I've also received some complaints about the smell, which I'm not offended by, but it's just extra gutting to know that no matter what I do, I can't seem to fix it. My babies used to purr all the time, but now, they rarely do unless they're snuggled up to me.
Realistically, I'm not expecting much. I don't even know if this post is gonna stay up because of rule 2, even if the peeing is just a part of the story. I just don't know what to do. I took way too long getting out of bed today because I'm just so exhausted and in pain from my chronic health issues. My friends have called it an impossible situation and said that as far as they can tell, I've been going above and beyond trying to make this work.
What am I doing wrong??
