I spent months thinking about how Medusa's gaze works as a game mechanic — and ended up building a game around it
This might be a niche post for this sub but I've been obsessing over Medusa's gaze and wanted to share where it went.
What fascinated me: it's not the monster that makes the myth compelling — it's the gaze itself. The idea that direct eye contact means instant petrification is such a precise, elegant weapon. Perseus had to use a mirror shield. The solution isn't strength — it's indirection.
That constraint became the core of a real-time PvP browser game I built. The three cards are:
🛡️ Mirror Shield — reflects the Gaze (Perseus's solution, canonically accurate)
👁️ Medusa's Gaze — removes the Veil (exposure to the gaze)
🤍 Mystic Veil — covers the Shield (nullifies its protection)
Each player has 12 energy bars. Choose secretly, reveal simultaneously. Drain your opponent's energy — the loser is petrified.
I'd love this community's perspective: do you think Medusa's gaze is underused as a game mechanic? What other aspects of the Gorgon mythology do you find most interesting from a narrative or mechanical standpoint?
(The game itself: gazeofmedusa.com — browser, free, no install — but genuinely curious about the mythology discussion regardless)
