Does the nose always know?

I know the nose knows rule but I bought some pork chops from Kroger the other week, 5 chops in a Styrofoam container and plastic wrapped like normal. Christ they smelled like rotten eggs.

Bought another pack last night and again it smelled awful. I told the butcher at Kroger and he said sometimes the packaging leaves a sulfur smell on the meat? What? Is that true? Or do we trust the nose always? I'm out $30 and 10 pork chops so far.
