When your assessment tests material your training video never covered

If you build certification or exam-prep training, you've probably had this moment: a learner flags that a quiz question covers something the video never mentioned. Or worse — the video explains a concept that never appears in the assessment.

This happens because most teams produce videos and assessments in separate workflows. The video creator works from one version of the source material; the assessment writer works from another (or from memory).

The fix isn't better coordination between people — it's anchoring both to the same source document sections. If Chapter 3 of your training video maps to Section 4.2 of the regulation, the assessment for Chapter 3 should draw from the same section. When the regulation changes Section 4.2, you know exactly which video chapter and which assessment questions need updating.

This is especially critical for certification training where the cost of inaccuracy is high. A learner who studies the wrong material for a cert exam isn't just inconvenienced — they fail, and your course loses credibility.

The practical step: before you record a single video or write a single question, map every planned chapter to a specific source document section. Then build both video and assessment from that mapping. It feels like extra work upfront, but it saves you from the re-do-everything problem when the source inevitably changes.
