do you regret getting the official diagnosis “on paper”
i’m 21F and i am currently actively being pushed by my therapist to finally get diagnosed with NPD by a psych. i’ve been in and out of therapy and psychiatrists offices for years - mostly substance abuse and eating disorders. first time a cluster b diagnosis was mentioned around me was when i was 16 and freshly arrested and i immediately saw that diagnosis as a death sentence. every therapist i’ve had has called me a narcissist which i know that i am and my current one now claims that the first step of dealing with my actual problems, instead of “the symptoms of my problems”, is getting properly diagnosed. but i feel like that’s going to bite me in the ass. every psychiatrist I’ve had that has even suggested NPD i immediately start exaggerating my ED or my GAD. as far as i’m aware there is no treatment for npd, ive done cbt and psychoanalysis and nothing has worked plus i don’t know any meds that help with personality disorders let alone NPD. im currently with just a GAD diagnosis and a nice xanax prescription and i feel like getting a formal diagnosis will fuck me up, doctors will refuse to prescribe me anti-anxiety meds and therapists will refuse to help me. also if anyone could recommend me a type of therapy that they believe helps i’d really appreciate it since both cbt and psychoanalysis haven’t really done much for me. i’ve been recommended logotherapy if anyone has experience with that.
