Finding a job (apprenticeship)

I’ve just graduated and I’m trying to figure out how to even find a solid apprenticeship program.Ive started signing up for the unions around me just waiting for some of them to open up (i live in Clayton ca for reference).I heard it was hard to even get into the union so what should I do as a backup if I don’t get in?Also do they always drugtest and has anyone bypassed that somehow asking for a friend
