What If Civilization's Biggest Mistake Was Forgetting How to Repair Things?

Not engines.

Not machines.

Not phones.

Ourselves.

For most of human history, people repaired what they depended on.

Tools were sharpened.

Clothing was patched.

Homes were maintained.

Knowledge was passed down.

Relationships were repaired.

Skills were refined.

Today, many systems seem optimized for replacement instead of maintenance.

Replace the device.

Replace the employee.

Replace the community.

Replace the tradition.

Replace the attention span.

Replace the thought.

When repair disappears, continuity disappears with it.

A person who repairs learns patience.

A person who maintains learns observation.

A person who restores learns stewardship.

A person who constantly replaces learns something very different.

Maybe the question isn't whether our technology has advanced.

Maybe the question is:

Have we become better caretakers of what already exists?

What is one thing modern society should repair instead of replace?

A question from the Ætherion Codex.
