Regret getting into fitness full-time
Ive been working in fitness for 11 years in some capacity. Ive had full time jobs, part time teaching jobs, personal clients in between, and most recently for a few years now im working as a "full time" trainer for a medical clinic. I use quotes because I probably average about 25 hours a week - which I know is a lot for the job that we do.
Ive reached the point of total burnout and resentment for ever getting into this field full-time. Im in my upper 30s.... had I known even in my mid 20s that this is what I wanted to do, id have had the freedom and energy to hustle and create my own business, set my own prices - make real money. But simply put im too tired.
I haven't received one single raise from the company I work for since I started. That, combined with fluctuating schedules due to cancellations and never knowing how much my next paycheck is going to be, makes it extremely hard to make ends meet.
I did start my own private training on the side - but I quickly learned that it wasnt going to be feasible for me to scale that while working my main gig which EXHAUSTS me beyond anything I've experienced. And I can't afford to temporarily cut back on the main gig while searching for more clients.
There's also the fact of the matter that I want to become a Mom. If I were to get pregnant within the next year, I have zero protection for parental leave. Basically, i would have to quit or they would just replace me first. This on top of no PTO, no sick days, no raises, just no general security are all making me dread it more and more every day.
The sad part is I absolutely love training. Im excellent at it and I feel alive when im in the moment with my clients. But doing it full-time is slowly killing that passion.
Right now my ideal scenario is a secure, full time job with benefits + keeping training as a light side gig - maybe 2 or 3 high paying clients a week. That would be amazing.
I know many of you are able to make it happen and love this career. I do too - just not in a full time capacity.
