My 30F boss 46M told me its my fault my son has autism and would show zero kindness to me. Now he has a daughter with autism and reached out?
I am a mother of a child with autism. my husband left me years ago. I work in a big company and I had no support. having a special needs child is not like having an ordinary kid. You can get a call any time from the school he is having a crisis and to pick him up or you get late to work because he will not let you go.
Everyone was understanding with me until the general director retired and they brought in a younger one, 41. He wanted to prove to the board how efficient he is and started implementing some measures that were really extreme, cutting benefits, micromanagement. Suddenly I was put into a situation of: you either solve the problem with your kid or quit. you don't bring any benefits here. I didn't talk to him directly. I talked to my boss and then to her boss, then to HR and after months I was like... I need to talk to him. I set up a meeting with him one week prior.
He treated me in a way I will never forget. He was sitting at his huge desk, tie, white shirt, cold eyes, arrogant, superior. I was exhausted, hadn't sleep for a few nights. He wasn't understanding to me. He was very rude and told me: your kid is my responsibility only if I fathered him. Did I father him? I was stupid enough to start crying and told him his father, my husband, divorced me and this is why I have no help. And he said: women intuition is never wrong strikes again. I was 25 and my son was 5. after almost an hour of talking and crying he told me that he will allow me one day per week to work from home (remote work is not a thing here). I didn't need that. He didn't understand. I needed to be allowed when my child is in crisis to leave and take him home (it happens maybe 3 times a month). I would work during the weekends for those hours. I was crying with my face in my hands and he would be standing next to me with his fists in his pockets. he said maybe its my fault I have a kid with issues because I smoke.
He was freshly married and wife was pregnant. 5 years have passed and he has a 5 years old daughter with autism. same symptoms as my son. I saw him with his daughter in public. he couldn't control her, she would hit herself and hit him. She is non verbal, like my son and has horrible crisis if overstimulated. I am not close to him. but one of the upper managers is and she told me he was crying one day that he is tired and overwhelmed and couldn't keep a meeting because hsi daughter would just throw things and his wife was at the hospital and he was alone.
We met in the parking space on Friday (we haven't interacted for 5 years, he is way above me) he looked at me and didn't say anything. But later that day he sent me a text on teams. just this: please forgive me. I answered hours later (I considered not to)and said its ok. He asked me if I want to meet on Sunday because he needs some tips and tricks as he is overwhelmed. I need this job and honestly I was curious and agreed to. we talked about his daughter . but at one point put his hand on my leg and once on my knee and at the end he invited me over. it was 9 pm. I said I am in a hurry.
tl;dr: boss invited me out to talk about kids with special needs but ended up touching my leg . what do i do about this next time I see him?
