Advice?
I (22M) just went through a breakup with my girlfriend (23F) of 3 years, and I’m honestly struggling a lot and need outside perspective.
We had a very intense relationship and were basically building a life together (living together with friends, talking about engagement, future plans, etc.), but over time we started having a lot of fights. I also wasn’t great with my emotions, and instead of handling things properly, I would shut down and distance myself. I regret that deeply. I also spent a lot of time escaping into video games instead of being present with her, and I feel like I neglected the relationship in ways that really hurt it.
Recently, she ended things after a long buildup of tension and pressure. Now it’s messy because of her family and friends, who strongly dislike me now and think I won’t change. Even though she broke up with me, she still says she loves me but needs space to figure out who she is and what she wants in life.
After the breakup, we still spent several emotional “final days” together (packing, hanging out, meals, movies and other dates etc.). It was very affectionate and confusing—we cuddled, kissed, held hands, cried together, and ultimately had a very emotional goodbye where we both said “I love you” and kissed and hugged before I moved out.
She said she wanted minimal contact “like maybe a snap in the morning and then one at bedtime”. Even now though, we’re still in contact on Snapchat and she’s not completely cutting me off. She replying within 5-20 minutes every snap and I’m replying kind of the same if I’m free. We also have loose future plans like possibly seeing each other for my birthday and a movie later in the summer, but she’s made it clear she needs space and doesn’t want to give false hope. She also said if there’s ever a chance again, I’d need to show real change that’s permanent (therapy, emotional regulation, communication, etc.).
On top of all this, I’m dealing with housing/visa uncertainty and may have to leave the U.S. soon, which makes everything feel even more intense. (Was on a student visa but when that ended I was chilling cause I was gonna switch to a fiance visa cause I was planning on proposing soon) There’s also a coworker situation on her side that’s been making me anxious, where she’s been getting attention from someone else during this breakup.
I still love her deeply and want to eventually rebuild things if possible, and I think she does too, but I’m struggling hard with the breakup, regret, jealousy, and fear of losing her permanently. I don’t know if I should hold on to hope or start fully letting go, or what the healthiest way forward even is.
