The AI Paradox: Higher Productivity, Higher Stress | SHRM From the Workplace blog | Future of Work, AI, and Human Sustainability

Artificial intelligence is transforming the workplace faster than any technology in recent memory. From recruiting and workforce analytics to learning platforms and performance management, AI is no longer experimental. It is becoming embedded in the daily reality of work.

Yet a growing body of research reveals an important paradox.

Employees who use AI regularly report higher productivity, greater job satisfaction, and increased optimism about their careers. At the same time, many report higher levels of workplace stress, cognitive overload, and pressure to perform.

As organizations accelerate AI adoption, expectations often accelerate alongside it.

This raises a critical future of work question:

Can organizations increase productivity without increasing human strain?

For CHROs, HR leaders, CEOs, and organizational development professionals, the challenge is no longer simply digital transformation. It is human sustainability.

My work focuses on the intersection of AI, leadership, happiness, and organizational culture. While much of the conversation centers on what AI can do, I am increasingly interested in how AI changes the human experience of work.

The organizations that thrive in the future will not necessarily be the most automated. They will be the ones that successfully balance technological advancement with human wellbeing, resilience, and sustainable performance.

The future of work is not only about building smarter systems.

It is about creating workplaces where people can flourish alongside them.
