25 Years of the 13 Sohmas: A Fruits Basket Rewatch Announcement Thread

##This is a story about a riceball and her tent

Hey guys. Holofan4life here.

I am pleased to announce a rewatch of the beloved classic Fruits Basket.

##What is Fruits Basket about?

After the accident in which she lost her mother, 16-year-old Tooru moves in with her grandfather, but due to his home being renovated, is unable to continue living with him. Claiming she will find someone to stay with but also fearing the criticism of her family and not wanting to burden any of her friends, Tooru resorts to secretly living on her own in a tent in the woods.

One night on her way back from work, she finds her tent buried underneath a landslide. Yuki Souma, the "prince" of her school, and his cousin Shigure Souma, a famous author, stumble across Tooru's situation and invite her to stay with them until her grandfather's home renovations are complete.

Upon arriving at the Souma house, Tooru discovers their secret: if a Souma is hugged by someone of the opposite gender, they temporarily transform into one of the animals of the zodiac! However, this strange phenomenon is no laughing matter; rather, it is a terrible curse that holds a dark history. As she continues her journey, meeting more members of the zodiac family, will Tooru's kindhearted yet resilient nature be enough to prepare her for what lies behind the Souma household's doors?

##Why should I watch Fruits Basket?

You know 100 Girlfriends where Rentarou dates many girls? Well, what if Rentarou was a girl and only hanged out with genderbent versions of Karane and Nano?

If you love heartfelt melodramas, Fruits Basket has it. If you love absurdist comedy, Fruits Basket has it. If you love moments that tug at the heartstrings, Fruits Basket has it. If you love characters you're emotionally invested in and legitimately care about, Fruits Basket has it.

This will be my first time watching Fruits Basket and seeing what it's all about. I would love to watch it with all you guys.

##Proposed schedule

The rewatch will begin on July 5th, with it continuing until October 6th. And then on October 7th, there will be a thread where you can post your overall thoughts. Each thread will be posted at 5:00 PM EDT.

For the first time ever in the history of the anime subreddit, we will be doing a rewatch of the 2001 Fruits Basket series. It's celebrating its 25th anniversary on July 5th, and that is the reason behind is rewatch. If you're a fan of the Fruits Basket reboot and never seen the original before, I highly suggest checking the original out and seeing what that's about.

After that, and a overall series discussion thread followed by a one day break, we will be watching the Fruits Basket remake that aired in 2019. That consists of 63 episodes across three seasons, of which we will take a one day break in-between each season. I don’t currently plan on including the Prelude movie at the end as it's kinda problematic and I don't know if I want to touch that, but I could be persuaded if enough people push for it.

So, to recap, we will watch the 2001 anime, then a one day break, then season 1 of the 2019, then a one day break, then season 2, another break, and then we close out with season 3. If major events happen in late 2001 Fruits Basket, try to avoid discussing it until it shows up in the remake. If you must, you can reference them using the spoiler tags.

I hope you decide to give this show a chance. I feel like the show just like the cat in the Chinese Zodiac should be remembered and not forgotten about.

That's it for now. Let me know if you are interested in participating. Until then, I'll see you around.
