What does everyone do between rows? (Plywood, stepping stones, ect)

I just put in a garden at my new place, and before I had stepping stones inbetween rows but I didn't really like them, it was a bit of a balancing act and weeds grew around and kinda under them. The last years I just had nothing there and walked around my garden with rain boots. My grandma puts plywood between her rows, I wouldn't mind that but I would prefer it to look a little nicer than that.
