Serving those who serve, unless their service

Insurance/Claims

I'm a 42 year old veteran who served two tours in Iraq (2005 & 2008). I have PTSD and sleep disturbances which lead to migraines, anxiety and mood issues (read: mental health issues).

That said, I've been a member of USAA going back to the early 2000s, have purchased vehicles through USAA, and even have my homeowners policy with them.

I already have $700,000 in coverage through another insurer, but when I received an advertisement from USAA regarding adding a life insurance policy, I decided to get a quote. My wife and I had our first child in 2022, bought a house in Oct 2024, then had our second child in January 2026. I figured getting a second policy would probably be the smart thing to do, since the mortgage would eat up most of my current policy.

What did USAA decide? They denied coverage, but said they'd be willing to "reconsider" in six months if I provide documented stability of my mental health disorder.

Am I overreacting, or is 20 years not a greater indicator of stability compared to six months?
