A few weeks ago I slid into a guy’s DMs because I thought he was cute. We ended up having a (what I thought) surprisingly good conversation, shared hobbies, similar interests and I genuinely thought we were getting along! Then he ghosted me. No explanation. Nothing.

Unnecessary backstory:
I cried a lot yesterday. I had just found out that another guy I had a small crush on has a girlfriend. It wasn’t serious. We’d talked for maybe five minutes total. Unfortunately, my brain likes to plan entire weddings after one positive interaction with a man so I went home and had a minor emotional crisis.
That somehow spiraled into crying about my actual deep-rooted desire to be chosen by someone, which then spiraled into crying about my previous relationship where I spent 4.5 years basically BEGGING to be chosen. I‘m working on it…
So seeing the guy who ghosted me today was already kind of a slap in the face. Especially because my best friend had literally just sent me a screenshot of his Bumble profile the day before and all I could think was: “Oh. So he does want to date. Just not me.”

Anyway.

I decided to take care of myself today instead of spiraling again. I cleaned my apartment, did laundry, cooked a proper meal and went to Pilates.
My Pilates classes are tiny. I arrive and my instructor is chatting with a guy. After a few minutes I ask how they know each other. They met on a dating app. Apparently it’s kind of a date because she’s teaching the class and he’s checking it out. Then she mentions that her friend is coming too and she’s also bringing a date. So it’s a double date I guess? At this point I already feel a little awkward.
Then the friend arrives. With her date. And her date is the guy who ghosted me.
At this point there are exactly five people in the room: my instructor, her date, her friend, the guy who ghosted me and me. That’s it. Nobody else is coming.
We immediately recognize each other and proceed to spend the next hour aggressively pretending we don’t.
So there I am, doing pilates as the fifth wheel on a double date, six feet away from a man who stopped replying to my messages.

It was already awkward being stuck in a double date I wasn’t part of. It became significantly more awkward when one of the dates was someone who ghosted me.
