How to be better?
Is there anyone out there who’s managed to not necessarily ‘overcome,’ but find solutions to the cognitive struggles that come with epilepsy? Specifically, the forgetfulness? More broadly, general cognitive functions that are necessary for a high-volume of administrative tasks in a corporate working environment?
I’m currently working in the most technologically involved job I’ve ever had, managing spreadsheets, contracts, client communication, scheduling, invoicing, reception, postage, and more. And I’m starting to think I got in over my head with this job. I tried believing (perhaps naively) in the power of will- power, that I could simply “will” myself to perform better and not forget things so often and just be better overall at keeping up with this insane amount of daily tasks. It’s a lot for anyone without any neurological conditions, let alone someone with epilepsy and ADHD. Now that I’m in it, it seems like no matter how thorough I am, how many reminders I set, how many times I review my cheat sheets to remember steps/ processes, I ALWAYS miss at least 1-2 things, and it’s like a weekly thing now that I have to fix mistakes rather than just avoid them altogether.
I guess I’m looking for some good news, some hope. Is anyone out there able to keep up with a high-volume task-based job and if so, how are you doing it? Did you have to ask for accommodations from your job? What kind of process do you have to help yourself remember so many things? I want to do better and be better, operate at a higher level as a person, and hopefully work my way up to a more comfortable salary. But I worry I may never get there if I can’t figure out how to be more successful in dealing with these challenges. If no one can help, I guess I just needed to get off my chest that I’m struggling and that I hope someone can relate. Sending love a light to all those out there dealing with this ball and chain that is epilepsy. 🙏💙
