The Charging Issue with Most Motorola Razr Fold Cases Currently Available
Like many Razr Fold owners, I’ve purchased and returned more cases than I care to admit trying to find one that works properly with wireless charging.
Coming from Apple, I have MagSafe chargers all over the house and in my car. Since Motorola chose not to build magnets into the phone itself, most case manufacturers have added magnetic rings to their cases so the phone can be used with magnetic chargers. Sounds great in theory, but in practice I’ve had nothing but issues.
I’ve tested 5+ cases from Amazon and experienced everything from the phone not charging at all, to showing that it’s charging but gaining little to no battery overnight. I’ve also received warnings on the phone regarding slow charging and suggestions to reposition the phone on the charger.
After doing some research, I think I figured out why.
I found Motorola’s internal diagram showing the wireless charging coil location. The charging coil appears to be centered around the Motorola logo on the back of the phone. The problem is that most case manufacturers seem to position their magnetic rings too low because they’re trying to avoid the large camera bump.
As a result, the magnets pull the phone into a position where the charging coils don’t line up correctly.
I was able to test this theory with one of my favorite cases, the Leiau case with the Invis Ring. I placed an adhesive magnetic ring slightly above the built in ring, closer to the camera bump. Immediately, wireless charging improved and I was able to achieve TurboPower charging consistently. Charging speeds were dramatically faster than before.
Unfortunately, the adhesive ring started peeling off after a day of use, so it wasn’t a long term solution, but it convinced me that ring placement is the real issue.
I hope Thinborne and Poetic didn’t ignore the placenta of their magnetic ring and did things a little different. Based on the preliminary product photos, it looks like they may have placed their magnetic rings slightly higher than most of the Amazon cases. But we won’t know until we are able to physically examine the case.
For anyone shopping for a Razr Fold case, pay close attention to where the magnetic ring is located. If it’s positioned too low, you will most likely run into charging issues regardless of which charger you’re using.
If anyone has found a case with the magnetic ring positioned closer to the camera bump or the center of the phone, please share. While I continue to purchase and test cases from Amazon, I’d prefer not to be banned from for excessive returns. At the same times, I don’t want to keep a case that doesn’t charge my phone properly.
