[BotW][OoT] The Story vs How the Story is told: Why BotW has just as much Story as OoT.
I've seen for years now people say that BotW (and TotK by extension) have "no" Story or that all the Story is told through memories and flashbacks. Im not here to argue about whether or not that was the right call or a good way to ever tell a story. If you dont like how the Calamity plot was told, I completely get it.
What im actually here to discuss is why it seems like so many people just ignore Links entire journey in these discussions. I think if you entirely removed the memories and only had the present day plot with the context you are given my Impa, The King, the Champions, and other npcs, the game really doesnt have any less Story to it than OoT. Im using OoT as an example here because it is typically considered to be THE example of a Zelda game.
Link waking up on the Great Plateau, completing the first 4 shrines and hearing the backstory and main goal of the game from the King is pretty much the exact same as the Kokiri/Deku Tree section of OoT. Same with the journey to Impa in Kakariko Village and going to meet Princess Zelda for the first time. After that, both Links journey from region to region, encountering important characters who have a problem thst he needs to solve both because people are in danger and because his goal is related to the problems. BotW just has 4 dungeon regions instead of 8. Then you go into the Ganon(dorf) controlled castle and defeat him before he decides to take the nuclear option and then you beat him again with the help of Zelda and/or the Sages/Champions.
I know that I basically just described the story of almost every Zelda game but that's my entire point. I recognize the 4 3d games following OoT had a stronger story focus but thats where the memories and side quests come in to fill the gap. Im not saying one way is better than the other or anything either. I guess I just want to hear from people who do feel that way about the story in the Wild Era games explain what they mean in more detail. Everything I said also applies to TotK and the rest of the series as well so feel free to bring them up. I just wanted to keep my post focused on the two biggest examples.
