How can I support my brother who feels completely hopeless and refuses change?

Opinion / Thoughts

Hello, this is my first time posting on Reddit. I’m hoping for some advice on how I can approach supporting my brother.

To give a bit of background context, he is 25 and has worked in hospitality since he dropped out of uni in his 3rd year. He’s lives at home with me (when home from uni), mum and dad and has many good friends that he has known for years. He goes to the gym often and stays pretty healthy. While not diagnosed, he very much fits into the category of adhd (our mum is diagnosed with adhd and dad with autism). He’s struggled with his mental health since secondary school, going to a few councillors over the years and being on and off with depression medication.

He mainly struggles with feeling hopeless, believing that he’s not going anywhere in life, can’t speak to people, isn’t going to get a girlfriend etc. To me, I genuinely see this as not an accurate picture of his life. Everyone who knows him only has praise to say and he is very good with speaking to people to the point that I envy his ability. However, as a result of this anxiety, every few months he spirals into the same negative pattern where he starts feeling shit so he isolates himself and then feels more shit and then doesn’t go out and on and on.

How can I help him break this cycle?

He’s very open about his emotions and how he feels and often speaks to me or our parents about it. We always listen and are there for him (my mum has done a counselling course previously and is very understanding ear) but it doesn’t seem to really change anything. I know he needs to make the change, either in his thinking patterns or perhaps by setting some achievable goals to boost his confidence. But when I suggest this I am either immediately shut down or he will agree but then not go through with anything.

As I mentioned before he works in hospitality, which in no way at all is a bad thing (our mum has worked a market stall our whole lives) but I don’t think it is really fulfilling for him. The jobs in our area are majority tourism or trade based and he has made it very clear he doesn’t want to do a trade. I’ve suggested that he could do a teacher apprenticeship, as another guy (27) I know who has struggled with mental health and has adhd, is a teacher and finds it very engaging and rewarding.

Sorry this is a bit of a ramble but I’m just at a loss. I want him to see how much of a great person he is and that he is capable of achieving things if he puts his mind to it. How can I make him see this?
