Tips to stop ruminating on why people don’t want to be friends?

Question

I am too old to care but the truth is when I meet new people and they don’t like me or we don’t click, I ruminate for days. Sometimes leading to small panic attacks.

I’ve always sought validation from others, mostly because I’m not sure how to be myself. Social anxiety and awkwardness only complicate it. I can be a
social butterfly with no inhibitions & be so free at times. Then as soon as my bubble feels threatened I crumble. I’m not always good at social cues. I also have a massive fear of becoming a narcissist. Over the last several years I’ve tried to put myself out there as far as meeting new people and such. I’m from a small town so everyone is connected somehow. I’ll go out, meet people, have fun, feel like I’ve found my people, we have great convo, sometimes we exchange contact info then suddenly it fades out. I can sense when it’s bc someone doesn’t like me. Multiple times I’ve been brushed off when I invite people to hang, my friend requests on social media are ignored. I’m not a perfect human but I have a good heart and good intentions. Idk what I’m doing wrong.

How do I stop letting this eat at me? It’s like OCD kicks in and all my brain wants to think about is that people don’t like me, why don’t they like me. Because it’s happened more than once, I’m always left feeling like it’s because of something I’m putting off. Maybe I don’t seem genuine, maybe I come across as trying to hard. Idk. On bad days it feels like rejection, which leads to me feeling like I’m not likable or not a good person.
