Relationship problems?

So my bf is very very clingy and im very independent, I can go a week without calling and just texting here and there. Yes, he means so so mcuh to me and I love him dearly, but my past relationships have really messed me up and forced me to not be clingy so I lost that habit. My friend is coming over for a week, and I told him that I will try my best to text him but he is now answering dry to me showing that he is upset. Im not sure what to do. I told him repeating that im very independent. Anyway have any advice to help my relationship better?
