Academic Misconduct
Hi, I'm a Foundation Year student in the UK and I've been invited to an Academic Misconduct Meeting regarding one of my chemistry assessments.
The uni’s concern is that there are ‘significant’ similarities between my submission and another student's submission.
I received a formal email from the Academic Conduct Officer informing me that a meeting has been scheduled and that an examiner will be present to discuss the work and ask questions about it.
I've already contacted my Students' Union advice service (ASK) and have had a meeting with them. They advised me to request the evidence being relied upon by the university, including details of the similarities identified and any comparison documents that can be shared before the meeting.
I emailed the university asking:
-What specific similarities have been identified.
- *It was the mistakes that were the same*
-What evidence is being relied upon.
- *The mistakes*
-Whether I can view the relevant sections of the other student's work (or a redacted version if privacy rules prevent disclosure).
- *They sent the other students back to me, it was REALLY similar*
I've also gathered all the notes, drafts, and documents that I still have relating to the assessment and have submitted them.
What I'm most worried about is the meeting itself. An examiner will apparently be present and may ask questions about the work. The assessment was completed quite a while ago and I don't remember details of every answer.
My questions are:
-Has anyone been through a similar academic misconduct meeting at a UK university?
-What sort of questions do examiners typically ask?
-How much weight is given to notes, drafts, and supporting documents?
-What should I expect from the process overall?
For context, this is my first academic misconduct allegation and no decision has been made yet. The meeting is part of the investigation process.
